Best Dog Treats for Training: A Guide for Pet Parents
Share
Whether you are teaching “sit,” practising recall or rewarding calm behaviour, the right treat can make training easier and more enjoyable. The best training reward is one your dog loves, can eat quickly and tolerates well.
What makes a good training treat?
Look for small, easy-to-chew pieces that are convenient to deliver immediately after a desired behaviour. Soft treats are often useful during fast-paced sessions. For larger treats, break them into appropriately sized pieces if the product allows it.
Choose the reward for the task
For simple practice at home, your dog’s regular kibble may be motivating enough. For distracting outdoor environments or challenging new skills, a more exciting treat may help. Every dog has different preferences, so experiment with suitable textures and flavours.
Keep portions sensible
Treats add calories. A common veterinary guideline is to keep treats at no more than around 10% of daily calories, with balanced food providing the rest. For puppies, small dogs or pets with medical conditions, ask your veterinarian about suitable portions.
Reward at the right moment
Give the reward immediately after the behaviour you want to reinforce. Keep sessions short, use praise as well as food, and finish while your dog is still interested. Never withhold meals to force participation.
